A jury recently awarded a firm client $600,000 for serious injuries he sustained in a car crash in the City of St. Louis. Partner Matthew Devoti tried the case over 4 days in mid-August with Judge Clinton Wright presiding. After deliberation, the jury assessed the man’s damages at $600,000 and assigned the majority of fault for the damages to the driver of the vehicle in which he was a passenger.
In late May 2014, the man was a passenger in a vehicle involved in a one-car crash that happened shortly after leaving a St. Louis nightclub. Earlier in the night, the man and his friend spent time at Felix’s Pizza Pub in Dogtown. After Felix’s closed, the men went to the nightclub, Mike Talayna’s Jukebox Restaurant. Minutes after leaving the second bar, the driver crashed the car at the intersection of Tamm and Manchester Avenues in the City of St. Louis. The driver was taking the firm’s client to his home when the crash happened.
Before trial, the driver pled guilty to driving while intoxicated and second-degree assault. He served two years in the custody of the Missouri Department of Corrections. The jury assigned 70 percent of the fault for the injured man’s damages to the driver; the jury did not find Mike Talayna’s Jukebox Restaurant at fault. The firm’s client settled his case against Felix’s Pizza Pub before trial.
